The mysterious sci-fi project from the Wachowski…er, siblings (The Matrix) and Tom Twyker (Run, Lola, Run) has its first still online and a few digital concept pieces for your perusal. Featured here is Bae Doona as a character named Sonmi-451. The concept art is far more compelling with a hybrid mix of Blade Runner and Speed Racer visuals. Hopefully, less Speed Racer than Blade Runner, but you get the idea.
The film stars Tom Hanks, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Hugh Grant, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, Jim Broadbent, and Keith David. An interesting ensemble to be sure, so it’ll be interesting to see how they build this epic. Based on the novel of the same name by David Mitchell, “Cloud Atlas” promises to be one of the most intriguing pics of 2012, especially with all the talent involved. With such a wide, sprawling story, it’s hard to get an idea of what to expect, especially without a trailer, so below is the book synopsis from amazon, which helps to link possible cast members to various storylines. Either way, I’m looking forward to seeing more about this project, tentatively scheduled to hit theaters in October 2012.
From Amazon: A reluctant voyager crossing the Pacific in 1850; a disinherited composer blagging a precarious livelihood in between-the-wars Belgium; a high-minded journalist in Governor Reagan’s California; a vanity publisher fleeing his gangland creditors; a genetically modified “dinery server” on death-row; and Zachry, a young Pacific Islander witnessing the nightfall of science and civilisation — the narrators of Cloud Atlas hear each other’s echoes down the corridor of history, and their destinies are changed in ways great and small.
